According to the New York State Police, the crash occurred Friday night on Interstate 90 in the town of Stafford. Troopers responded around 8:53 p.m. to reports of a serious accident involving two eastbound vehicles.
Investigators say Berberian was driving a GMC pickup truck when it was struck from behind by a BMW traveling in the same direction. The impact caused the pickup to overturn, ejecting him onto the roadway. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Arrest and Charges
Authorities identified the BMW driver as Patrick J. Hastings, 67, of Churchville. Troopers reported that Hastings showed signs of impairment at the scene and failed standardized field sobriety tests.
A breath test indicated a blood alcohol concentration at the legal threshold. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and additional traffic violations.
Hastings was taken to the Genesee County Jail for centralized arraignment.
