The community of Hazlehurst is grieving the tragic death of 39-year-old Benjamin Price, who was found fatally shot behind a residence on Johnsons Lane in an incident that has prompted an active investigation.

According to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded around 11:40 a.m. after a family member discovered Price unresponsive behind a home in the 1000 block of Johnsons Lane. Authorities confirmed he had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite emergency response efforts, Price was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Byron Swilley stated that investigators secured the area and began a full death investigation, though no suspect has been identified and no motive has been released at this time.

Price’s body has been sent to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy as officials continue gathering evidence and reviewing all available leads. Authorities are also asking anyone with information to come forward as the case develops.
