The Ascension Episcopal School community is mourning the tragic loss of senior Martha Odom, who died during a shooting incident at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday.

According to a statement from the school, two other students were injured in the event and are currently recovering. The school also confirmed that two additional students were present during the incident but were not physically harmed.

Martha Odom is being remembered by classmates and faculty as a bright, joyful, and compassionate student who made a lasting impression on those around her. Her kindness, energy, and presence on campus are being deeply missed as the school community struggles to process the sudden tragedy.

Head of School Sarah Davenport shared that the school is “walking through this moment together,” emphasizing unity, faith, and support for students, families, and staff during this painful time. She also noted the strength of the school community in caring for one another in the face of loss.

Rooted in its faith-based foundation, the school referenced Psalm 34:18, offering comfort through its message that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Ascension Episcopal School has expressed gratitude for the support received from the wider community and confirmed that counseling and pastoral care services are available to help those affected cope with grief and trauma.
